D.C. Representative Oye Owolewa Unites With Orthodox Jewish Chamber Calling for Hate Crime Investigation Following Vandalism at Char Bar Kosher Restaurant

In a significant show of solidarity, D.C. Representative Oye Owolewa has joined forces with the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce to urge law enforcement to investigate the recent vandalism at Char Bar, a kosher restaurant, as a hate crime. This plea comes amidst a wave of concern from the Jewish community after the restaurant, located in the 2100 block of L Street, was targeted in the early hours of November 10th.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded swiftly to a call reporting the destruction at Char Bar, only to discover shattered windows and large stones strewn nearby. This incident, coinciding with the dark 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, has heightened anxieties. Kristallnacht, often referred to as “the night of the broken glass,” marks a tragic moment in history when Nazis in Germany murdered nearly 100 Jews and demolished Jewish-owned establishments, synagogues, homes, and schools.

The timing of the vandalism has evoked historical trauma and raised alarming questions about the intentions behind this act of destruction. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Rep. Owolewa has made an impassioned call for the event to be scrutinized as a hate crime, underscoring the necessity of a thorough investigation to ensure justice and prevent further incidents.

In a letter penned in collaboration with the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce, Rep. Owolewa expressed his steadfast condemnation of the vandalism. “The safety of our businesses is paramount,” he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the safety concerns of Jewish businesses and all enterprises within the district. “We must strive to create an environment where no individual or community fears for their safety due to their identity or beliefs,” he stated, reinforcing the imperative for unity and vigilance against hate-fueled actions.

This joint initiative highlights a broader imperative to protect communities from bias-motivated crimes and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all. As investigations continue, the collaboration between local leadership and community organizations serves as a testament to the strength of collective advocacy in the face of adversity.
