In a landmark development set to fortify the economic ties between Israel and the United States, the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce has lauded the recent announcement from Israel’s Joint Prime Minister's bib Netanyahu’s Office, Finance Ministry Smotrich, and Economy and Industry Ministry led by Nir Barkat regarding the cancellation of customs duties on American goods.
Under the directive of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and Economy and Industry Minister Nir Barkat, Israel has moved to abolish all customs duties on products imported from the United States, its largest trading partner. This initiative follows the Knesset Finance Committee's approval and the Economy and Industry Minister's endorsement, which are necessary steps to amend the existing orders on trade levies and protective measures.
The United States remains Israel's closest ally, with the trade relationship reflecting this strong alliance. In 2024, exports of goods to the U.S. reached a substantial $17.3 billion, complemented by an impressive $16.7 billion in services exports.
Historically, the 1985 U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agreement ensured that approximately 99% of goods imported from the U.S. were exempt from customs duties, making this recent announcement significant for the remaining sectors. The focus now shifts primarily to imported food and agricultural products from the U.S., which will benefit from this latest exemption.
