The Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce Lauds Israel’s Decision to Bar Pro-BDS Members of Congress
The Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce lauds the decision by the Israeli government to prevent Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from conducting their desired hate mission in the Holy Land.
Their vocal support of the anti-Semitic BDS movement and history of inflammatory anti-Semitic comments are factors that Israel has properly utilized in the past to prevent visitors of all ethnicities and genders from entering. The BDS movement is now the primary hotbed of anti-Semitism around the world – especially on college campuses. Legitimizing this movement in any way is the legitimization and desensitization towards vicious, dangerous anti-Semitism and incitement to violence.
The refusal of these members of Congress to acknowledge the existence of Israel’s government or meet any of its officials on this trip further proves that they had no intention of learning the realities or opening productive conversations. Their intent was clearly to grant legitimacy to dangerous hate through one-sided photo-ops and speeches, and potentially even incite violence in Israel, the US and/or other locales. This trip was co-sponsored by the Miftah organization, which has a proven record of promoting anti-Semitic propaganda, even the age-old blood libel that has cost inestimable Jewish blood over centuries.
Israel is a vibrant, diverse democracy that welcomes over four million visitors a year and allows dissent and criticism of its policies. Still, democracy should never be used as a tool or excuse to deny a nation’s right to exist or to endanger its citizenry, or the lives and livelihoods of Jews around the world.
The Chamber would also like to thank President Donald Trump for his public support of Israel’s decision and for his courage and clarity on this matter. Back home, American Jewish communities have seen an alarming rise in anti-Semitic incidents in recent years, which would most certainly be exacerbated by a high profile hate mission by members of Congress. It is a breath of fresh air to see security prioritized over political correctness and to see democracy utilized as a tool for peace, rather than abuse.
We look forward to continued work by Israel’s friends and allies of good faith to bring peace and security to all peace loving residents of the region.
